Larry Shaber
'98 Red, Giddyup
larry took his interest in collecting new beetle memorabilia and turned it into an online business. he even had a nubeetlemobilia booth at R2K.

During the R2K awards ceremony, several of the vendors were thanked. Larry was offended that he was not included, and decided to leave the list.

Larry was certainly a character who made the list more interesting (and for some, more aggrivating). He covers this topic in the interview we videotaped with him.

Here's an e-mail exchange that he and I had before R2K, as I was getting this site ready.

Lisa,
I don't consider myself a standup comic per se.
I am more of a Don Rickles or Robin Williams type
comedian in that my comedy is spontaneous. I have
a "knack" for playing off of other people's
innocent comments. I'm at my best when someone is
interviewing me. I've always been the person that
comments on things that other people don't "see",
or I see things in a totally different light.
Worse yet, like Don Rickles and Robin Williams, I
don't hesitate to bring it to people's attention.
I really do believe that I was meant to be a
Comedy writer, but unfortunately, I have yet to be
discovered. >From the time I entered Kindergarten
to my graduation from Graduate School, I have
always earned the reputation as being the class
comedian. I can also do impressions of many famous
people and cartoon characters, something I started
doing when I was around 6 years old. At least two
of my three sons have the ability to mimic voices
as well.

I would not want to be in a comedy "skit" at
R2K because that is not what I do, but if I'm
interviewed on tape, there's no telling what will
come out of my mouth. I can literally turn an
innocent interview into the Def Comedy Jam in a
matter of seconds.

Not all comics can do standup. That's why Don
Rickles has never done standup. He admits that he
can't even tell a joke very well and neither can
I. He has made his whole career ripping apart
people while being interviewed. That's my favorite
kind of comedy.
