katie perry was the daughter of mitch perry,
longtime list contributor. katie also contributed to the list
from time to time, but we learned about her mostly from the
travelogues that she and her father posted during the summer
of 1999 while they were on a cross-country road trip.
on christmas day of 1999, katie died in a car accident at the age of 17. the outpouring of emotion on the list in response to mitch's post about the accident was unprecedented in list history. many who had never met her felt moved to respond. some who had always been on the "tech" side of the ongoing tech vs. people argument said that they were surprised to find themselves moved, in some cases to tears, by mitch's heartbreaking account of his last hours with his daughter. several memorials to katie have been posted to the web. plans are underway for a memorial at r2k, and mitch will be driving her car, angelisa stardust, to the event in roswell.
