All Pods Go To Roswell!

Spacepod and lisa are going back to R2K again in June of 2002. We'll have a co-pilot, our good friend Stephanie, who is a two-year R2K veteran. We hope lots of people will again follow along with us via this web site!

If you don't know anything about the Allpods project, it might be helpful to take a look at the original site, starting with the orientation section.

We hope that you enjoy following along with us. Feel free to send us some mail, or better yet, post a comment to one of our entries. We love to hear from people who visit the site!

Thank you!!

I was quite surprised to find a check from CafePress in the mail recently. It wasn't a big check, but in the thought-that-counts department it was huge, especially since i had not bothered to create new designs for this year and didn't expect to sell much of anything.

Now that CafePress is offering so many different items (an Allpods bike courier bag, anyone?) I'll really have to go to town with it next year.

Anyway-- thank you. Your support of the Allpods project is greatly appreciated, and I hope you're enjoying the shirts. I have heard (from more than one person!) that they can be good for your love life :)

On a completely different note-- I had a dream last night that I went to Roswell, but forgot to bring my camera and video camera. It's a little early to be having anxiety dreams about Roswell, honestly!

Friday: Setup, Registration, Skywatch Party, no Bug Glow :(

Headed out to the convention center in the morning and found most of the Central caravan folks hard at work stuffing our goodie bags. Marcy, Terri, Mark and Linda Gilson, David Toney and Julie, Rick and Randy Carlson, Howie, Mrs. Howie, and Howie Junior, and of course the head alien, David Allen, were all there, and many others I didn't know. Tina was there too, shooting video of the proceedings. Looks like there's going to be LOTS of video from this year.

David and Julie had a close call on the trip in. A woman in the car next to them (not a caravan member) reached back to pet her cat, swerved, clipped them, causing them to spin twice. Other caravan members and a semi had to work hard to avoid running in to all of this. Fortunately, no one was injured and although Figment suffered a trashed rear fender, he is still driveable and basically ok.

Friday morning -- I'm in ROSWELL!

Long day of travelling yesterday. Two planes, then four hours in a little tin can rental car through the desert. When i stepped out into the rental car parking lot, the attendant asked me if the heat was getting to me. "No..." I said, taking a deep breath of the clean desert air, "no, actually it feels really good!" He laughed and said, "Where are you from?" "North Carolina. We get heat like this, but with 100% humidity."

It is very strange to roll into this city alone and pod-less. I really miss Spacepod and desperately wish he were here. But I'm still very, very glad to be here. more...

wednesday wonders

Well, we made it to Little Rock. I joined the Eastern caravan in Memphis this afternoon; we had eight cars, including a black custom-done convertible and a car with custom paint that changes from red to orange depending on your viewing angle.

After establishing a meeting point with Russ, I waited for the caravan at a truck stop. I parked facing the off-ramp and they spotted me immediately. It was so nice to be part of a caravan again after driving for almost eight hours by myself! We went through a lot of construction in Arkansas and finally made it to the hotel around 6:40 this evening. I'd been on the road for more than 11 1/2 hours and was ready for a break.

We had dinner at a local restaurant near the hotel -- so near that we could walk there. One of the hotel front-desk people gave us a lot of coupons for free appetizers -- they had some good spinach artichoke dip!

I'm really glad to see everyone again this year and meet some new folks, too. I wonder who will arrive during the night... usually we leave an overnight stop with more cars than we arrived with. The one thing I'm sad about is that Lisa isn't here. I'm writing this on Lisa's iBook, which she sent with Dan (along with the rest of the Web cam stuff). The last two years I thought it was fun just to be on the Web cams occasionally, but learning about how they work is even more fun!

Phoebe, my Beetle, has been quite a trooper -- we drove more than 600 miles today and she never skipped a beat.

And Mom, if you're reading this, my back feels okay. (For those of you who don't know, I strained my back three and a half weeks ago. I'm recovering pretty well, but I really miss skating.)

Tomorrow we go on to Sweetwater, where we meet up with lots of Dallas and Houston people (I think).

today we said goodbye to my grandfather, fred rosberry. we also drove a lot, hung out with the family, and ate some really good seafood.

i've gotta say that it was really nice to be with the family, see some cousins i haven't seen in a few years, meet my uncle rick's fiancee. more...

it gets a little crazier...

couldn't get hold of mom last night or this morning. met dan as planned at the mellow mushroom in asheville; he somehow managed to park near a vortex nb. (note for future meetings in asheville: the mellow mushroom is really easy to find, the food is fab, as is the outdoor seating in the summer. just meet there, don't mess with trying to find other places to meet.)

lots of discussion over lunch about the cams and everything. looks like dan is going to run the cams in his car during the day and do one big upload at night. tonight i tried to make some adjustments to the web cam pages and scripts to accomodate what i think is likely to happen. we'll see. check the web cam pages at night (like, after a late dinner) and the slideshow page. you might find a little something there.

oh just a note about stephanie-- lest her new co-workers think she's gone off home to just doo-dad around the house for the next week and a half, not so. she got phoebe all buffed, polished and de-cluttered today, and is heading out at o-dark-thirty tomorrow to meet up with the eastern caravan somewhere along the road between memphis and little rock. more...

on the road... but not with the caravan

today i'm driving to asheville, nc, to meet dan for lunch. i'm going to hand my web cam equipment over to him and he's going to transport it to roswell for me. he's probably going to run a cam in his car during the trip, and upload the pictures at night.

then i will, sadly, turn around and go back home to durham. i wish i had time to meet the caravan folks in knoxville and spend the night there with them, but it would make wednesday way too difficult if i did that.

My grandfather died today.

we knew that this was coming. everyone went to see him on Mother's Day weekend. i am so glad that i did see him one last time, and that Craig met him before he went.

everyone in my immediate family is currently travelling-- my mom and stepfather are in savannah, and my little brothers are doing a service project somewhere close to there.

i hoped that i would not be faced with a choice between roswell and my grandfather's funeral. fortunately, both stephanie and craig were here when i got the call, and they helped me work out a plan.

steph is flying home tomorrow morning. she's going to drive phoebe out to roswell.

dan and his pod inky have graciously offered to be the "beast of burden" and transport all of my web cam equipment and the awesome looking diorama and other set pieces to roswell. i'll drive out to asheville and meet him as planned for lunch there.

on wednesday, craig will drive up to maryland with me and we'll go to the funeral on thursday.

first thing friday morning, i'll fly out from dulles airport to albuqurque, rent a car, and arrive in roswell around the same time as the caravan.

stephanie and i will use phoebe as the web cam car up at registration... and the rest of the weekend will go as planned.

i'm very sad, and i guess it hasn't really hit me yet, but i'm so thankful that craig and stephanie were here with me when i got the call and they were able to help me find a way not to have to choose between my grandfather, who was very dear to me, and this trip, which is so important to me, too.

All Pods Go To Roswell!!!

it's late, it's been a long day of working on the web site, but i am so happy to be posting the first real entry to this year's allpods site.

preparations are well under way. stephanie, my co-pilot, will be arriving in less than a week! spacepod has been detailed, the first big webcam test has been completed, the site is all but ready.

my wonderful boyfriend craig came over today and built a diorama that i can put inside the car during the car show-- to present the web cam stuff in a slightly more polished way. This is the first year i have put real preparations into how that stuff will look.

this year i'd like to link to other sites which are going to be updated with roswell photos, travelogues, etc during the trip or immediately after. it should be easier for the folks at home to find pictures and stories on the web.

if you have a site that i should link to, please send me your info--the name of the site, the url, your timeframe for making updates.

SYIR!!!!
